The Advantages of Wood

Wood has been around in New Zealand for a number of years now. Wood is reliable, economical and versatile providing any home with a distinct uniqueness, warmth & aesthetic appeal.

Environmentally Friendly

Wood is a renewable and environmentally sustainable building product. The wood we use comes from sustainably managed radiata pine plantations and is grown specifically for wood product manufacture. Choosing a wooden house frame can offset more than four years of an average household’s CO2 emissions.

Easy to use

Wood is fast and flexible. Timber provides for design flexibility and allows modifications during the construction process. Wood is easy to work with – just ask your builder.

Durable and long lasting

Wood doesn’t rust. Wood will usually far exceed the minimum service life of 50 years which is required to comply with the New Zealand Building Code. Wood treated with the appropriate level of preservative and properly maintained can last more than a hundred years.  Modern timber treatment balances the risks of decay against the desire to use as few chemical preservatives as possible. Most timber framing for walls, roofs and floors requires either no treatment or low-level boron treatment.

Wood can take the heat

Wood can take the heat. Wood retains its strength and generally will not ignite at temperatures under 250°C. Once it catches fire, wood greater than 90mm thick develops a slow burning protective insulating char layer whilst the inner layer retains it strength and stiffness. Wood provides no shocks or surprises. When fully dry, wood is a natural electrical insulator and will not conduct a current or become live, which is the reason many power poles are made from wood.
